To the Letter

Sometimes when we are decluttering our possessions, it can feel like we are losing our mind in the process. Left feeling tired and drained from decision fatigue. We search for hours on the internet for the right way to do it. Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. It’s momentarily inspirational and then reality hits… and you’re back to overwhelmed.

But what if you didn’t have to chuck it in the fuck it bucket entirely. What if you switched tactics? As a minimalist and professional organiser, I consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to being able to release my own stuff. This is where the letter comes in. On January 10, 2017, the day after our house burnt to the ground, we received a handwritten letter. I kept it because I wanted to thank the sender, in person. I knew the address and drove past the residence many many times over the last 2 years. As I would go through our belongings deciding what had served us and what was to be kept, I would often come across this letter, which would prompt the thoughts of this thing I must do, express my gratitude in person. So, in my heart I knew, keeping the letter was the right thing to do. It’s now 8/8/2019 and many things fell into place. I was given the opportunity to thank the sender of the letter in person. So with letter in hand, I approached this kind soul and from the bottom of my heart thanked them, deeply feeling every drop of gratitude I had. Now as I write this, the letter is beside me, serving its final purpose – inspiring me to write this. But in my heart, I know, I can let this letter go now. I honoured one of my own core values -integrity. I told myself I would, and I did. Now there is a fullness and peace inside me. I followed my heart. This leaves no room for error, no second guessing myself. All parts of this season have come to a close and I can let go safely and comfortably. So I wonder, if we let our brain check out for a bit while embarking on our decluttering journey, and engaged our heart, would we be able to make deeper, more rational and fulfilling decisions when it comes to our physical possessions instead of trying to follow the internet “experts” to the letter, and followed our own intuition and our heart?
